WCW: Leslie Topps

Leslie Topps is the founder and CEO of The Topps PR Firm. Topps is a public relations professional, who has worked with countless celebrities, music industry figures, and other entrepreneurs. When she moved to Atlanta, Georgia she began to work in entertainment public relations. There she got involved with event management, talent handling, and red carpet events.

I had the pleasure of asking her a few questions and here are some of her responses:

  • What made you want to go into PR? -of all the fields and directions, why that one?

I ended up getting into PR, because I wanted a career in the Entertainment Industry. I began working for a PR agency in Atlanta back in 2013 whose office was located at So So Def Recording Studios. I felt it was a good opportunity for me to get connected, so I gave it a try. After starting my own business in public relations, I enjoyed the communications and networking aspect of the PR industry. I’ve been moving with it ever since.

  • I know the glitz and glamour is nice, but what is the ugly side of the business?

I would say, you have to really be on point and keen with your goals, and also why you chose to be in the entertainment industry. Celebs are just like everyone else, with the exception that they are public figures. There are ups and downs for everyone in life, although it may seem like someone’s life on TV is perfect. You really have to be smart and know how to communicate with people. There are no real friends in the business - only people that can help you take it to the next level, and also those who may need something from you. It’s always give & take relationship.

  • How is it as One: a woman in the industry?

As a woman, I have to be very savvy and well-educated to be respected. I’m watchful of who I let in my circle, and I’m very nice to everyone. I stay away from people who give me bad vibes.

  • Two: a black woman in the industry?

Being a black woman in Atlanta is a pro for me. Young black professionals are very successful in this city, so I meet a lot of people like me. Its great!
